The United States Capitol features a commanding cast-iron dome inspired by St. Peter's Basilica and the Panthéon in Paris, ringed by a colonnade of Corinthian columns and topped by the Statue of Freedom. The exterior is clad in white painted sandstone and marble, with pilastered facades, pedimented windows, and elaborate entablatures reflecting Roman Republican ideals. Balustrades, arched loggias, and richly ornamented friezes further articulate the building's monumental Neoclassical character.
