This is the main hall (Hondō) of Sensō-ji temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, characterized by its sweeping irimoya (hip-and-gable) roof clad in grey tiles and dramatically upturned eaves. The exterior is finished in vivid vermilion lacquer with elaborate gold ornamentation on the gable tympanum and large black-and-gold paneled doors. A subsidiary pent roof (mokoshi) wraps the lower story, a hallmark of Japanese Buddhist temple architecture in the Wayō tradition.
